The future of work is not arriving gradually — it is arriving in waves. The first wave of AI impact (2022–2024) was in knowledge work: writing, coding, analysis. The second wave (2025–2026) is reaching into professional judgment, creative work, and managerial functions. The third wave — AI impact on physical and service work — is beginning. Understanding which wave is about to hit your workforce is the most important question for organizational leaders right now.
The Labor Market Data That Event Planners Need to Know
Knowledge worker productivity gains are real but uneven. Studies from Stanford, MIT, and McKinsey consistently document 20–40% productivity gains for knowledge workers using AI tools effectively. But the gains are concentrated in workers who actively experiment, iterate, and integrate AI into their workflows. The passive adopters — who use AI sporadically without changing their underlying processes — are seeing marginal gains.
Job displacement is concentrated and sector-specific. Macroeconomic data in Q2 2026 shows significant employment reductions in specific occupational categories: data entry clerks, paralegals working on standardized document review, entry-level financial analysts, and junior software developers in certain functions. The narrative that "AI is coming for all jobs" is imprecise. AI is coming for specific, well-defined tasks within jobs — and eliminating the jobs whose task portfolios overlap most heavily with AI capability.
New job categories are emerging but the reskilling gap is widening. The net near-term employment effect is negative in specific sectors and positive in the aggregate — a distribution that creates significant political and organizational pressure.
Worker anxiety is elevated and affecting performance. Gallup's 2026 State of the Workforce report documents the highest levels of job insecurity concern since the 2008 financial crisis. The anxiety is not distributed randomly — it is highest among workers with high task-AI overlap, workers in mid-career without recent skill development, and workers in industries with historically low technology adoption rates who now face compressed adoption timelines.
What Organizations Are Actually Doing
The reskilling programs that work. The common features of reskilling programs that are demonstrating actual behavior change: they are role-specific (not generic AI literacy training), they include hands-on practice with real work tasks (not just conceptual content), they have manager reinforcement built in, and they connect skill development to specific career path outcomes. Programs that check all four boxes are rare and significantly more expensive — but they actually work.
